Manik demands perspective plan for NE

Agartala, Aug 21, 2011 : Union government should chalk out a perspective plan for the development of irrigation for tapping the water resources of north east region”, said Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Saturday.

Sarkar while inaugurating the three-day long national conference on ‘Water, Energy and Bio-Diversity- with special reference to North East region’ at Nazrul Kalakshetra said, “the Union government has adopted apathetic attitude towards north east that helped the hilly region to remain underdeveloped”.

The conference, organized by the Institution of Engineers (India), Tripura Centre, and National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, gets underway at Prajna Bhawan.

Claiming utter negligence to north-eastern states, the Chief Minister said, “We have to ask our due from the Union government for sustainable development of the region that could have been the torch bearer of the country in power”.

In his speech, Science and Technology Minister Joy Govinda Deb Roy emphasized on the need for use of renewable sources of energy.

Eminent Biotechnologist Dr Anil Chandra Ghosh and Hydrologist Dr NC Ghosh were present in the inaugural ceremony.

“The conference is organizing three parallel technical sessions besides discussion on water, energy resources and bio-diversity for scientific roadmap and sustainable conservation”, said Dr Swapan Bhaumik, organizing secretary.

“On August 22, Finance minister Badal Chowdhury accompanied by Power minister Manik Dey and Forest minister Jitendra Chowdhury will remain present to mark the valedictory session”, according to Ranen Dasgupta, organizing Chairman.
