Palatana transmission line to be decided by Sept

Agartala, Aug 08, 2011 : The fate of high power transmission line between Palatana power project, Tripura and National Power Grid, Bongaigaon, Assam is likely to be decided by September next.

Official sources here on Monday said, “The North Eastern Regional Power Committee would meet soon to decide on 650 km transmission line for the distribution to North eastern and other states”.

The 726-MW gas-based OTPC power project would start generation by February 2012 as declared by the ONGC CMD AK Hazarika.

“A technical experts meet on power transmission from the Palatana project to other states has already held here days before”, said TSECL Director (Technical) K Chakarborty over telephone.

Meantime, the plan is already finalized at the meeting of experts. “But the final decision would be taken at the NERPC meeting where NE-regional power ministers are members”, officials here added.

Tripura will get 196 MW of 726 MW while Assam the highest of 240 MW besides Nagaland, Meghalaya and Manipur 27 MW, 79 MW, 42 MW respectively and OTPC 98 MW from Palatana power project.

First bamboo innovation launched in Tripura

Agartala, Aug 07, 2011 : National Innovation Council (NIC) chaired by Prime Minister’s advisor on innovation Sam Pitroda has launched a Cluster Innovation Center (CIC) for cultivation and value addition of bamboo in Tripura.

NIC would operate CIC in partnership with Tripura Bamboo Mission to initiate an innovation movement in the country and to showcase the use of innovation as a platform for growth and development of bamboo sector on a multi-stakeholder approach.

The CIC was launched in a three-day national seminar on bamboo cultivation and value addition began here last evening, which would be a cell to act as the networking hub of the cluster and to outline various activities leading to innovation in products, services, business models in the cluster, said state forest minister Jitendra Chowdhury.

“The CIC will be a catalyst and play the role of a facilitator for seeding and supporting innovation in bamboo sector in Tripura and that will really be an innovation in the country,” Chowdhury said adding that the state government had already formulated a multi-prong strategy to increase bamboo cultivation at individual level and value addition in both individual and cluster levels.

He however, pointed out that the conference attempted to focus on farm to market approach for bamboo sector development and it would provide a platform for convergence and synergy among the various stakeholders from across the country for the development of bamboo sector.

As many as 400 participants including 100 outside dignitaries comprising senior officials from different institutions, reputed scientists and industrial users had taken part in the conference to interact with the representatives of panchayat raj institutes, SHG federations, master artisans and joint forest management members of Tripura to promote bamboo cultivation and value addition.

In the wake of gregarious flowering of the dominant bamboo species Melocanna Baccifera (Muli) in northeast, the conference has also held a separate technical session on the various aspects of bamboo propagation, plantation, cultivation and scientific management.

Besides, the experts had expressed concern over rampant consumption of bamboo shoots as food item in Tripura and they had suggested massive campaign on the market potential for value added bamboo products and opportunities for promotion of livelihoods in bamboo sector.

Tripura will have third Golf course

Agartala, Aug 07, 2011 : Tripura will have its third golf course at Assam Rifles Compound after BSF and Army cantonment to attract more tourists soon.

“The proposed golf course will be established under Agartala Mega Destination Project approved by Union Ministry of Tourism recently”, said a TTDC official here on Saturday.

The project includes introduction of light and sound system at Ujjanyata Palace with development of two lakes and creation of tourism related facilities at Akhaura Check Post.

“State Government has also given the green signal to go ahead with the ambitious plan’, the official added.

“A team from Chandigarh College of Architecture will prepare the Detailed Project Report to execute the plan with an estimated cost of Rs 50 crore”, informed the TTDC official.

“However, the survey for the plan is already completed and a team of experts is expected to arrive here by next week”, the official said.

Besides, the Tourism Ministry has also agreed to separate project for Udaipur and Tripurasundari Temple.

Bank strike hits Tripura too

Agartala, Aug 05, 2011 : Along with the country, employees of nationalized banks in Tripura, observed a day long general strike in protest of privatization of the banks by Union government on Friday.

At around 9.30 am, branches of several banks wore deserted look. Some employees were seen with placards and banner supporting the strike. They criticized the Union government decision on privatization.

However, hundreds of the bank customers were seen at different branches and ATM counters for transaction. The regular services of the bank were disrupted.

NE translators awarded

Agartala, Aug 05, 2011 : Four writers of Northeastern region will be awarded with the Sahitya Akademi translation prize 2010 for their outstanding literary works.

The awards would be presented during a special function at Thrissur in Kerala Aug 16, according to an official release of the Sahitya Akademi.

The northeast writers are Anupama Dutta Saikia (from Assam in Assamese language), Shyamal Bhattacharya (from Tripura in Bengali language), L. Birendra

Kumar Sharma (from Manipur in Manipuri language) and Uthrisar Khungur Basumatary (from Assam in Bodo language).

Saikia has translated a Kannada novel; Bhattacharya translated Punjabi short stories; Basumatary translated an Assamese novel; and Sharma translated noted writer and journalist Khuswant Singh's novel "Train to Pakistan".

The prize carries an amount of Rs.50,000, an engraved copper plaque and a citation.

Shyamal Bhattacharya, a former official of Indian Air Force, said, 'a large number of poets, writers, artists and literateurs of Northeast are yet to be recognized although they have done so many outstanding works in the literary and cultural fields'.

Assault on SDMO Bishalgarh condemned

Agartala, Aug 05, 2011 : The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Tripura branch strongly condemned the assault on Sub-divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) of Bishalgarh by some miscreants near Office Tilla area under Bishalgarh police station on last Wednesday night.

On Wednesday night, when SDMO (Bishalgarh) Dr Partha Sarathi Chakraborty reached near at office Tilla area from his home to join his duty at Bishalgarh hospital, some miscreants in inebriated condition halted the way of Dr Chakraborty and assaulted him without any provocation.

Later, Dr Chakraborty filed an FIR at Bishalgarh police station.

The Pediatrics association of Tripura also criticized the attack on him and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits responsible for the assault.
