Agartala, Sep 05, 2011 : Three jail inmates jumped the jail in Sonamura on late Saturday night. Two of them were Bangladeshi dacoit and the other was an Indian criminal held in connections with theft.

Rafikul Isdlam ( Comilla, Bangladesh), Ali Wahid ( Buchirang, Comilla Bangladesh) and Abu Taher ( PR Bari, Belonia) made the daring escape as there were clear dereliction of duties on the part of the jail staff.

The jail inmates were housed in Sonamura Sub jail’s Ward-2 along with ten others. According to preliminary reports the three inmates slipped out of their cell through ventilator and then scaled the outer wall. Since there was evident lack of required night watch by staff and other means and also as there was no sentry at watch tower all the three could make good of their escape.

As soon as the news broke, senior jail officials, police officials, administrative officers rushed to the sub jail and ordered investigation. Jail Minister Manindra Reang also visited the jail.

Sub jailor Dhananjay Bhattacharjee who was on Casual Leave also came to jail.

A massive search has been launched to hunt the fugitives but it is believed that they had already fled to Bangladesh.

For the last few years there were regular occurrences of such jail breaks with impunity across the state as the prison authority seems to be struggling with increasing number of inmates and convicts. Besides, there were also allegations of serious negligence as well as corruption among a section of jail employees.
