REPA to oversee teachers’ ethical issues

Agartala, Aug 11, 2011 : Tripura government has constituted Right to Education Protection Authority (REPA) under Right to Education Act (REA) to deal with the ethical issues in education sector including private tuition by the government teachers.


Education minister Tapan Chakraborty said that REPA had already been made operational in the state. It had also been empowered to punish the teachers for breach of ethics and violation of the norms. 


Teaching faculty members would now face punishment under REPA if anybody lodges a complaint regarding private tuition. Chakraborty observed that barely two percent of government teachers are engaged in aggressive private tuition in the state. 


Tripura is having prohibitory regulations against private tuition by the government teachers were initiated by the state government beforehand in several phases, the last one with widespread effect and controversy in 2005-2006. However, due to involvement of several employees association from both major political parties actions could not be taken against the erring teachers.
