Ker Puja begins on Saturday

Agartala, Jul 23, 2011 : One of the most important Tripuri festivals- Ker Puja began at Ujjayanta Palace compound on Saturday morning.

According to official notification, it would continue uninterrupted for over 30 hours. The area in and around the palace has been notified restricted for the puja.

Ker puja permits no death, birth and recreation within the demarcated puja area. Even, no outsider is allowed to enter in the area. Anybody violating the customary rules will have to pay a fine.

A structure constructed with green bamboo poles serves as the deity for Ker. The chantais, head priest, holds supreme power and is regarded as the king during the occasion.

The puja rituals are carried out at government expense. Before starting the puja and at the end, police fired guns.

Besides Agartala, the puja take place almost in all tribal villages for the welfare of people praying against calamities and to ward off evil acts.

The sacrifice of animal characterizes this tribal festival.
