Tripura bandh peaceful

Agartala, Jul 13, 2011 : Normal life came to a standstill in Tripura following the state wide 12-hour Bandh called by both Congress and ruling CPM on Wednesday.

Since morning, capital Agartala took a deserted look. There were no vehicular movements on roads including NH 44. The city shops kept their shutters down and the markets remained closed. There was no market in the sub urban areas.

The passenger’s trains in Agartala-Dharmanagar-Agartala route were cancelled.

Banks and financial organizations were closed; attendances in government offices and Civil Secretariats were virtually nil. All the educational institutions remained closed even as some school examinations were cancelled.

Both the parties called 12-hour bandh in the state in protest against the series of violent clashes between police personnel and Congress workers since last few days.

Congress demanded dismissal of the government and promulgation of President's Rule in Tripura, alleging a "breakdown in the law and order situation".

CPM blamed the Congress for "conspiring against the Left Front government by creating a situation of lawlessness".

Passengers flying to Kolkata and other destinations from Agartala faced serious problems as no vehicle was available for them. Massive security arrangements were made at every nook and corner of the capital and its outskirts areas.

BJP, on the other hand, opposed the bandh.
