‘Rape’ charge sheet filed against Asst Prof Sunil Kalai

Agartala, Jul 08, 2011 : Tripura Police submitted charge sheet against an assistant professor of Tripura Central University-Sunil Kalai, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, for his involvement in an alleged rape case.

A case was filed against Sunil Kalai in West Agartala Police station on January 26 last for his alleged involvement in the sexual abuse of a girl.

On May 25 last the Investigative Officer Bidya Debbarma submitted charge sheet under section 376 (rape), 493 (sexual exploitation giving assurance of marrying) and 417 (cheating) IPC before the Chief Judicial Magistrate here.

Sunil Kalai had led a conjugal life with a college girl by giving assurance of marrying her.

“In the charge sheet, statements of at least 10 of his neighbors had been recorded during investigation and all of them corroborated the allegation”, said the IO.

When the sensational case came to fore the University authority had claimed to have initiated an ‘enquiry’ into the allegations. However, no punitive action was taken against him.

“We seek justice for the victim as per course of law”, said Tapati Chakraborty, Chairman of Tripura Commission for Women on July 8.

“I hope, the Vice-Chancellor would not take any step that could have been gone in favour of the accused assistant professor”, the Women Panel Chief added. “The law should not spare the guilty”, she said.

Only recently, controversial Sunil Kalai was also accused a section of journalism students of acting in an unfair manner against some students while examining their examination papers.

It is alleged that Sunil Kalai had tampered the result sheet of 4th semester intentionally as many of the students raised protest against his misdeeds inside the classroom.

“While some students got undue privilege from Kalai, some others who fell out of his favor for protesting his wrongdoings were given marks in a way that they could not make it through in the 4th semester.”, said a student.

“Sunil Kalai’s attitude could very well be gauged from the simple fact that instead of internationally acclaimed films of journalism like ‘All the President’s Men’ based on Watergate scandal or ‘The Killing Fields’ based on journalistic activities in horrifying conflict zones like Cambodia, he used to show movies like ‘Basic Instinct’ with ‘Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas which was infamous for some sexually explicit scenes in the class room filled with women students in the name of film-review”, said a student.

The situation was vitiated that allegedly only due to Sunil Kalai’s behavior, seven out of 24 students, most of them girls, 2nd semester, had left the course. They had also filed complaints to the Vice-Chancellor Prof Arunaday Saha. But no action was taken against the assistant professor.
