Agartala, Aug 04, 2011 : The ambitious project for supplying drinking water to the city dwellers in Agartala Municipal Council’s North Zone is being implemented in full swing. So far first phase of the 186 km drinking water distribution network has been completed.
The Rs 78 crore-project is being implemented under centrally sponsored JNNURM scheme.
“Under the project 12 new overhead tanks, 12 deep tube wells and four underground treatment plants would be constructed. They would cater to the areas-mostly capital Complex - where Civil Secretariat, Assembly House, High Court, Governor House and several other offices located”, said AMC Chairperson Dr. Prafullajit Sinha on Thursday.
“The NBCC was given the task to implement the project by December 2012”, Sinha added.
“Pumping stations are being built under a separate Rs. 102 crore Sewerage project of North Zone”, said the AMC chairperson.
Meanwhile, Asian Development Bank had also sanctioned Rs. 200 crore for South and Central zones. “Survey work is going on. The money is yet to be received”, he said.
“Two more dwelling areas for slum residents will also be constructed at Radhanagar and Joynagar. The dwellers residing on khas land were already served with eviction notice”.
Replying a question on city beautification drive, Sinha added that 3000 trees would be planted across the municipal area this year”. Beside, two ‘islands’ would also come up at the capital.
On the question of poor parking facilities, the city father said, “We held a meeting with the Traffic department. They are looking into the project. It is expected to be over by 2015”.
