Agartala, Aug 23, 2011 : National Human Rights Commission asked the Director General of Police K Saleem Ali to submit a report on July 10 incident in which 11 media persons were assaulted by policemen.
Subal Kumar Dey, Editor of Syandan patrika, had moved the Commission seeking its intervention in the wake of the July 10 incident.
In a press conference the editor said, the NHRC had given four weeks time to the DGP to send the report to the panel.
“The NHRC also cautioned that the Commission might take action for failure to comply”, said Dey.
Dey had requested the NHRC on July 27 last and his compliant was accompanied by video clippings etc. The commission served the notice to DGP on August 2 last.
He said a team of the commission might also visit to the state to take notice of the situation.
“We have been forced to move the NHRC as despite filing FIR and assurance from the top cop no action was taken against the erring police officials who were involved in the assault on 11 media persons”, he said and added that this was for the first time any such notice was issued against DGP in Tripura. He said Tripura Police accountability commission also asked a detailed report.
He also rued that Chief Minister Manik Sarkar despite his assurance did not take any positive steps so far.
Arun Nath, secretary to Tripura News paper Society who was also present in the press conference demanded that the media persons working in electronic media should be given accreditation card.
“We have taken up the matter with the ICAT minister and also concerned officials. The issue should addressed without delay”, he said.
