Agartala, Aug 02, 2011 : The state government has announced a welfare scheme for lonely pensioners without family or house.

As part of the scheme, the government will build a housing estate on half-an-acre area near G.B. Hospital and a new geriatric ward in the hospital.

“The government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the project and the first installment of Rs 2.5 crore has been credited with the social welfare department,” said official sources in the social welfare department.

The housing estate will have accommodation for 100 pensioners in 50 well-furnished double-bed rooms with attached toilets. The department will also provide an office room, a common dining room, recreation centre, facilities for indoor games and exercises, a caretaker, an auditorium and a library. There will be scope for gardening and round-the-clock ambulance service as well.

However, the pensioners will be required to make a small monthly payment for all these facilities.
