Two meitei militants held in Agartala

Agartala, Aug 08, 2011 : Tripura police arrested two Meitei militants from city outskirt here. The militants are suspected to have been members of Kangleipak Communist party (KCP) out fit of Manipur.

Acting on a tip off police personnel from East Agartala Police station raided the house of one Damayanti Pal at Jogendranagara early morning on Monday and nabbed Nangam Subed Maitei (35) alias Rubel alias Sumit and Hirojit Singh (26) of Manipur.

“Police recovered 13 mobile handsets with nine SIM cards, two laptops, a digital camera and some other incriminating papers from their possession”, said a Police official.

What however intrigued the police here that the two were hiding in Agartala for the last eight months.

“The duo was produced before a local court by East Agartala Police station with a prayer for Police custody under several sections.

A top police official said, “We are trying to find out their actual identity” but refused to divulge any more details for case interest.

Officials said that Manipur police had been alerted and a team of cops from Imphal is likely to arrive here soon to interrogate the two suspected KCP militants. They might also seek transit remand for them.

Tripura had always been a favored corridor for the Manipuri militants from their hideouts if Bangladesh to Manipur. Earlier also several Meitei militants belonging to PLA, UNLF, PREPAK and KCP were arrested from the state. In mid and late eighties the Meitie militants used Kailasahar and Dharmanagar in North Tripura to cross over to Imphal from their Bangladesh camps. Many of them had also been nabbed on their way.
