Agartala, Aug 04, 2011 : The searing heat and humidity in the last week forced the state government to buy highest amount of electricity from outside to reduce shortfall in demand.
According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) report, Tripura had recorded about 27 percent deficit in monsoon rainfall this year comparatively better downpour in northeast after Arunachal Pradesh.
The lowest rainfall had been recorded in Manipur (-51%) followed by Meghalaya (-49%), Nagaland (-39%) and Mizoram (-32%) till Wednesday, which affected the generation of hydro-power in the region.
Power Minister Manik Dey said that the highest ever power consumption had been recorded at 194 MW against the own generation of 100 MW on Tuesday..
“For past two days the power consumption rose near 200 MW, leaving behind am estimated 90 MW deficit. To meet the gap the TSECL had to resort to two hours load shedding,” Dey said.
He however, pointed out that the use of cooler and air conditioners had increased substantially even in rural areas in such extreme weather condition persisting over a week across the state and as a result, power consumption had also increased.
Dey maintained that the hydro-power generation in the country had gone down and most of the states were depending on thermal power and following increasing demand the cost of power is also soaring and added: “Unless rain comes situation would not improve.”
Meanwhile, IMD officials forecast that light to moderate rain would occur at many places over Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram in next 24 hours while heavy rain might occur at one or two hill bound places of the region during next 24hrs.
Tripura had been recording 90-95 percent humidity in past three days besides, minimum temperature ranging 26-27 degree Celsius and maximum temperature at 34-35 degree Celsius, about 1.8 degree and 3.6 degree high than normal, met officials said adding that the cyclonic pressure in east coast could not influence the weather parameters in northeast
